Heat oil to high heat. Braise onions for a few minutes; together cinnamon sticks. Add half tomatoes. Then all spices except garam masala. Add chicken. Let it emulsify with spice mixture for a few minutes.
Add ginger and garlic (not before - burns if added too early)
Reduce to low heat. Simmer for 30 minutes.
Then add garam masala; and other half of tomatoes.
Simmer for 5 minutes. All Done.
Coriander - few chopped teaspoons into mixture; and a bit sprinkled on top.
